No, its not a sword born out of wedlock. It received its name for fitting into neither the one-handed sword family, nor the "two handed sword family", thus being labelled a "bastard".
It means you can wield it with one hand or two hands
Legend has it that Cloud Strife's Buster Sword got the name from Bastard Sword.

In the CRPG games I play, this is my favorite weapon next to the throwing axes.
Why throwing axes?
Let's consider the bow and the crossbow. Long-range, yes, but they do puny damage. Bah.
Bastard swords and greatswords are wonderful. They make their damage felt. But you can't throw them at your enemy when they are still far off.
Now, the throwing axes. Long-range, yes (maybe not as long as the bow, but, well, you can't have everything); substantial damage? You bet. If your character has a high strength bonus, your enemies are often dead before they can get within 3 feet of you.
And if they do get close enough, it is then a job for the bastard sword.

Don't worry. I don't have a single axe in my house. :-)
throwing axes? =.=
Unless the throwing axes has a return to thrower feature, you need to carry a lot of this.
I prefer to use longbow with acid arrow than swap with bastard sword from close range.
Axes, I have one at my hometown, you want me to buy for you?
Remember the BBQ at P*** when P*g**'s husband took out a small axe to break the charcoal :P
