Open Conference System Installation

Basically this is a bit technical, but the installation is kinda complicated and those online help does not really help, so I am going to do my guide here.

Open Conference System is a open source software that can be used to manage conference which includes user registration, paper submissions and many more features. It can be downloaded at http://pkp.sfu.ca/?q=ocs

If you read the manual it says it requires Apache, Php, MySQL. The easiest way is to a software called XAMPP which contains these three things.

Once you download the Open Conference software you have to unzip it and put it in the XAMPP/htdocs folder.

One thing that they did not tell you is you must manually create several folders
1. cache - inside cache you create the subfolders _db, t_cache and t_compile
2. public

If you did not create these folders, you will face problem installing, err, how do you actually install??

You just type localhost/software and follow the instructions.

One common area is the database error, it will say access denied or something like that.

The most common mistake is getting your User wrong. Check it at the MySQL console.

If you done everything correctly, you should be able to install it correctly

A visit to DCA Penang

This was done a few months ago, but I was busy until now. DCA stands for Department of Civil Aviation. The DCA is established as an agency under the Ministry of Transport (MOT) Malaysia to provide safe, efficient and orderly flow of air transportation, and to regulate aviation activities in Malaysia. The rapid expansion of Malaysia’s aviation and air transport industries is largely due to the pragmatic approach taken by DCA in ensuring compliance to standards and recommended practices of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

We brought the school children from SK Pos Dipang, Kampar, Perak to visit the Department of Civil Aviation Penang as part of our Corporate Social Responsibility program.

One of the post in DCA is the Air Traffic Controller. According to their website, Air Traffic Control is a service provided by the Department Of Civil Aviation, Ministry Of Transport for the safe, orderly and expeditious flow of traffic within the Malaysian Airspace. The air traffic services is constantly being developed to meet the increasing needs of the modern jet age and requires skilled Air Traffic Controllers (ATCOs) who will have at their disposal highly sophisticated electronic tools to enable them to provide the service.

The job of an Air Traffic Controllers is unique and demanding for it requires ‘parallel’ thinking and rapid decision making. Each controller will be trained by the department using practical and simulation methods in acquiring the necessary skills.

In the control tower.
Interesting stairs they have.

I'm back again

I came back from my Raya leave but there was tons of work waiting, so I did not have time to update last week.

I was at my hometown when I saw this. Way of the praying mantis

Picture of my cat sleeping.

The view of my village is still the same.
When I came back to my office, I saw a monitor lizard walking along the corridor. Lucky I am used to wildlife, or I would be freaked out.

Sitora Harimau Jadian, a long lost P. Ramlee movie

I was in Borders when a book caught my attention.

The title triggered my ancient memories, it's a P. Ramlee movie in 1964, but unfortunately unlike all his other movies, this one is lost in the sands of time. Younger generations will never have the chance to see this, cause it has simply been lost.

Sitora Harimau Jadian is literally translated as Sitora the Weretiger. Western civilization have stories about werewolves but here we have story about weretigers.

This book is republished due to the hard work of Amir Muhammad, who found the classic book while researching about Malay movies. His story can be found here.
